Modernity –artistic modernity in particular– is characterized by a questioning of the past. However, it seems as though tradition continues to hold the greatest weight of all in Morocco (as in all Arab countries). Modern Moroccan art, arising from contact with the West –above all with the two countries that have occupied Morocco– took little time to rekindle its relationship with tradition after independence. But first it had to seek out ties with various regions, including those which were visual, linguistic and sound-based, to assert itself and earn full-fledged citizenship status. Thus, within a very short time, the history of art in Morocco has been written in close relationship with teachings, artistic hybrids and loans from outside.
Morocco, visual arts, heritage, identity.
