ABSTRACT

The Strait of Gibraltar is a critical node for ensuring the proper flow of supply chains, with 115,000 ships passing through each year. This privileged location on the Strait of Gibraltar means that the countries on the shores of the Strait can take advantage of its location. Spain, and in particular the port of Algeciras Bay, boasts the largest port in the Mediterranean and the fifth largest in Europe in terms of connectivity. Despite remaining the regional leader in tonnage movement, with 107 million tons in 2020, Tanger Med has been closing in on this title year after year and has already surpassed Algeciras Bay in terms of container traffic. To compete in the Strait, the Bay of Algeciras must deal with several insufficiencies, including a significant lack of rail connections with the central and Mediterranean corridors, which are the natural hinterland of the port. Correcting this lack would be a necessary condition for the area’s development. This would probably require the creation of a special economic zone for the Bay of Algeciras and the autonomous cities so that they could act as a lever to attract investment and promote trade. The mission of this Special Economic Zone should be to create a logistics and investment hub that promotes the creation of subsidiaries of European and international companies with interests in both Europe and Africa.
