Musulmanes en Melilla: apuntes etnohistóricos

Sol Tarrés Chamorro

ABSTRACT

The pattern in the already abundant literature on the Islamic associative movement and the institutionalisation of Islam has been to date the beginning of these processes in Melilla from 1985 to 1987, the result Organic Law 7/1985 of July 1 on the Rights and Freedoms of Foreigners in Spain, better known as the Immigration Act of 1985, and the subsequent nationalisation process. However, the city’s Muslims had already developed various forms of religious organisation before that point. In order to take a holistic approach to the institutionalisation of Islam in this autonomous city it is necessary to trace the lines followed in the last century and a half of effective Muslim presence in the city.
